The only part of Jobs-to-be-Done research that doesn’t use traditional tools is the qualitative phase, which uses a proprietary framing of the problem-space and uses a unique, but systematic, interviewing method to develop it. As a result, it has historically required a great deal of training and ramp-up time (especially for those trained in traditional qualitative research), and has not been scalable because people that get trained often leave for other opportunities just as they are establishing some expertise. It’s always seemed like a great target for automation, but we lacked the ability to scour the Internet in search of material that could be used.
While I am very interested in business model innovation, most people seem to focus on customer journeys. For some reason they think they can create experiences that delight consumers so much that they'll overlook the fact that the solution doesn’t help them get much of their job done. This is an easy focal point when there is little to no differentiation in the market. Therefore, since the interest in most organizations is around the the end user experience, I’m going to focus on the 14 consumption journeys of Jobs-to-be-Done, even though I believe there should always be a parallel effort to find real growth opportunities.
In this episode, I’m going to focus on the installation / setup journey for a new product. Universal maps are useful up to a point, so after generating 20 contexts, I decided to:
Generate 20 situations (or complexity factors) for each context - in survey format.
Generate job maps and 20 customers success statements for each step…for each job and context combination.
That’s a lotta meatballs. So basically you’re going to get twenty (20) universal jobs for various product categories. I’ve dreamt of cataloging scores and hundreds of jobs but was never able to do it without the time and cost investment required for Jobs-to-be-Done interviews. This is just one consumption area, and there are 13 more to go.
Imagine having all of this in your back pocket. I’ll be covering the installation and setup of…
Home Appliances - Installing products like refrigerators, ovens, washing machines, or air conditioning units in a home setting
Computer Hardware - Setting up components like hard drives, graphics cards, or RAM modules inside a computer.
Software - Installing software programs, mobile apps, or operating system updates on computers, tablets, or smartphones.
Home Entertainment - Setting up home theaters, game consoles, or smart TVs and connecting them to various entertainment sources.
Furniture Assembly - Assembling items like beds, chairs, tables, or wardrobes after purchasing them in flat-pack format.
Home Networking - Establishing and securing a Wi-Fi network by installing routers, extenders, or mesh systems in a household.
Smart Home Devices - Integrating devices like smart light bulbs, thermostats, or security cameras into a connected home ecosystem.
Vehicle Accessories - Installing new products in a vehicle such as GPS systems, audio equipment, or car seat covers.
Gardening & Landscaping - Installing items like water features, irrigation systems, or garden sheds in an outdoor setting.
Fitness Equipment - Assembling and setting up treadmills, exercise bikes, or home gym kits in personal fitness spaces.
Personal Care Gadgets - Setting up and using products like electric toothbrushes, hair styling tools, or health monitors.
Pet Products - Installing items such as fish tanks, electronic pet doors, or automatic feeders for household pets.
Office Equipment - Setting up printers, projectors, or ergonomic chairs in an office or home office environment.
Children's Products - Assembling and setting up items like cribs, swing sets, or toy structures.
Outdoor Recreational Gear - Setting up camping tents, portable grills, or kayak racks for outdoor adventures.
DIY Home Projects - Installing home improvements like new light fixtures, faucets, or shelving units.
Educational Kits - Assembling and using STEM or craft kits, such as robotics or painting sets.
Musical Instruments - Setting up and tuning instruments like digital pianos, drum kits, or synthesizers.
Photography Equipment - Installing and setting up products like camera lenses, tripods, or lighting setups.
Home Security - Installing security systems, alarms, or smart locks to protect a household.
That’s a lot! And I can take it down to whatever level I want, as needed. This is just the first level below a universal installation and setup journey. Imagine how tightly focused you could get after doing a higher level assessment to scan the market for opportunity. The data you can generate is almost limitless.
